Synopsis from Goodreads: This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.

BRIEFING NOTE: Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Short story: My sister K and I were walking through our local Books-A-Million and judging books by their covers as we so frequently do (c’mon don’t act like you don’t do it too!), and there on the “Best in Teen” table lies the beautiful sunset orange, translucent, gorgeous cover of what would soon become one of my top 5 fave books (HP and Hunger Games still claiming the top 2 spots of course but this may be a close third!).   We knew absolutely nothing about this book.  We had heard nothing, read zero reviews, nothing.  This was the first time we had ever laid eyes on it and instantly we were both drawn in. Needless to say we bought it on the spot taking the 18 dollar risk on a title we had never heard of before. Little did we know what awaited us in between the covers!

This book was like NOTHING I have ever read before.  It is told in a very non traditional, epistolary-like format.  The format may not be for everyone, but I personally found it to be genius.  I say “epistolary-like” because its not just in the form of letters but also hacked classified documents, chat messages, text messages, journal entries, and my favorite pages were what I can only describe to you as literary art!  You could literally SEE the action leaping off the pages.  I was so totally immersed into this format, I could not put it down.  I finished the entire book in one sitting (so don’t let that 608 pages scare you! It CAN be done!)

Not only were the pages so aesthetically pleasing to look at and drew me in so ingeniously, but the story itself was non stop action.  When the book first opens, you are thrown right into the action and from there it takes you on a literary roller-coaster ride that barely leaves you any time to catch your breath!  The story is filled with so many twists and turns that it made my head spin and left me speechless!

I don’t want to say too much about the plot because I would kick myself if I spoiled this amazing adventure for you, but my final thoughts are this: if you have this book at home, sitting on your self collecting dust just waiting to be read (and lets face it, who doesn’t have at least a few shelves on our bookcases of titles we will read “someday”!) then I highly highly HIGHLY recommend you RUN not walk to your bookshelf, pluck this bad boy up, grab a cold one (I recommend a cold Angry Orchid hard cider 😉 ) and read this epic tale immediately!  I promise you, you will not be disappointed!
